IT is snake season and everyone needs to be on high alert, warns snake expert Garth Carpenter.

He issued the warning after an eight-year-old girl was bitten by a night adder in Northdale last weekend.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics rushed the girl to Northdale Hospital after she was bitten on her foot while walking on the driveway. The girl is in stable condition.

Carpenter has warned that snakes are restless after winter and are searching for mates now.

“Snakes will be out during the early morning and late afternoon of very hot days. Night adders specifically are very common in this area and can cause severe injuries.”

Night adders have a mild cytoxic venom, but the venom can have severe consequences for victims who are allergic to bee stings.

“A bite from a night adder would cause swelling and will eat away at the tissue and skin. They are generally not considered dangerous to humans unless the person is allergic to bee stings,” he said.

Carpenter said everyone must be on high alert until the end of December.
