IN a symbolic donation of hair, Lisa Strydom, divisional manager of Cansa KZN, her daughter Ciara (9) and her sister Jennie Practsch had their hair cut and donated it to Cansa in order to make wigs for cancer patients in memory of Strydom’s mother.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Ciara said the donation was her idea because she had lost her grandmother.

“She died three weeks after mommy got married so I never had a chance to meet her. I know how it feels for families who are sad because they have lost someone they love, so I wanted to help,” she said.

The family had their hair cut last Friday, 26 August, which would have been Strydom’s mother’s 64th birthday.

“The demand for wigs is greater than the supply at the moment. We can’t keep up with people who require human hair wigs so we are appealing to others to donate their hair as well,” said Strydom.

She said usually it takes about three to four hair donations to make one wig because the hair needs to match.

Cansa is also appealing for people to donate their time to help make the wigs, whether it be a retired wig-maker or people, who do it as a hobby.

“For me, it’s my work. I see how meaningful it is when people get wigs. To see the smile on their faces when they realise they don’t have to be embarrassed having no hair - it’s just awesome.

“There are people who desperately need it and who will benefit greatly from it,” she said.

There are salons including, Sole and Blu Gel, in Pietermaritzburg, which cut hair free of charge if the client is donating to Cansa.
