“IT takes a village to make a difference,” said Theresa Pienaar, who recently started a charity organisation together with her son Zane Groenewald (25) to help the community of Pietermaritz- burg.

Named Porky’s People, the organisation aims to assist those with no family members and no means of taking care of themselves.

Pienaar (53) from Chase Valley said she has always been the type of person who would go the extra mile for others.

“I have always wanted to start something like this but I just didn’t know how to.

“After my son started to work for a charity crow-founding platform called Backabuddy, I learnt a lot about charity work and how I can help other people,” she said.

Porky’s People was officially opened earlier this month.

The charity recently donated a wheelchair to Shannon Dunn (65) from Oribi Village, who was born with spina bifida.

“Our aim is to build a community of people who are concerned about helping others.

People who can offer not only financial assistance but inspire random acts of kindness,” said Groenewald.

Pienaar said they are now working on making Dunn’s home more accessible for his new wheelchair. Dunn said he is grateful for his wheelchair, which he desperately needed for the past 18 months.

He also thanked everyone who contributed to making it possible for him to live a better life.
