A YOUNG fashion designer is urging the people of Pietermaritzburg to assist him to raise the cash he needs to attend a fashion event that he has been invited to in London.

Athenkosi Mfungula (24) from Ashdown is hoping to showcase his clothing line, Lemfux, at an event called the Fashion Designers and Craft Market Network in London in June.

The invitation comes after he was spotted with his clothing line in Denmark in November last year. “In 2019, I won Best Men’s Collection at the Durban Fashion Fair and I was invited to attend ‘My Arts Festival’ in Denmark.

“A week after returning from Denmark, I received an invite to London to showcase my clothing line,” he said.

He said he feels honoured and believes that the trip will help him a lot in terms of boosting his career.

“It has always been a dream of mine to have my collection known worldwide but I never thought it would happen so soon. I have learnt that when it comes to our dreams we must not limit ourselves because anything is possible.

“As a rising entrepreneur and fashion designer in KwaZulu-Natal, these opportunities are invaluable to me and I am honoured to have been chosen to attend them.”

Mfungula needs R30 000 to cover a return plane ticket, accommodation, the visa, food and the entry fee to register his line at the Fashion Designers and Craft Makers Network.

“I have started a fund-raising campaign called ‘Help me get to London’, where I am urging people to donate any amount that they can afford.

“This is a big opportunity for me and every rand counts.

“I will not only be representing myself at this event but I will be representing my whole country,” he said.

Mfungula said his love for fashion designing started when he was in grade 9 and since then it has grown into his passion.

“I used to draw designs of clothes and would ask my schoolmates if they would wear them.

“I even designed our matric jackets and that is when I knew I had a talent.”

He said his dream is to grow his clothing collection and open store across South Africa.
