AT the inauguration last Thursday at the Royal Showgrounds, Thobekile Ethel Maphumulo was elected the new uMgungundlovu District Municipality mayor with Thandi Rosemary Fucwane Zungu her deputy.

Although the election went to a vote, Maphumulo won with 32 votes.

Maphumulo said she is honoured to be elected mayor and is committed to serving the community with integrity.

“I acknowledge the councillors who have come before us and emphasise that we need community participation. We need feedback on whatever is happening in your communities.

“If you are not there to tell us, we are not going to know how to help you. We are aware of the challenges that are still facing us. We have a clear plan until 2021 and we are going to make sure we will work to address issues and backlogs.”

Maphumulo said the leadership of uMgungundlovu will have an integrated approach in everything they do, always putting the needs of the people first.

Addressing her new council, Maphumulo said the needs of the community will be addressed with a strong focus on speeding up service delivery.

“We need to go to the people - to live, to listen and to work with them so that in the end communities will say it is our work that helped them. Let us work together to take the district towards metro status, this is our goal by the end of 2021,” she said.

Former uMgungundlovu mayor, Yusuf Bhamjee, was appointed speaker and thanked councillors for their continued support and confidence in him to conduct business of the district in a professional manner.

“I will ensure at all times that no one exploits the fact that the ANC controls 71% of the district.

“Meetings of the council are very important. Good governance is about how we, as councillors, serve our communities.

“We are here to improve the life of all councillors,” he said.
