A LOCAL film called Same Love has been selected to be one of the films that will be screened at the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival that which takes place in Duran from September 21 to 30.

This film was written by Portia Mncadi from Ashburton but it was shot in Imbali Unit 15 and as well as Ashburton.

Mncadi told Echo that her film was shot and released in May last year.

She said she is very excited that it will be screened at the festival as it will give her the exposure she needs.

“I am so excited about this selection. This is the beginning of great and big things for me in the film industry.

“I love writing and I am committed to doing the very best I can to make it in this tough industry.

“I even quit my job as a secretary last year at the Department of Agriculture because I wanted to dedicate all my time and my focus into film making,” she said.

Mncadi said she started writing film scripts while in Grade 5 and this is her second film. Her first film is called ‘Ukhondolo’ (curse).

She said she decided to write the script because she wanted to raise awareness on the challenges that the youth of today face, especially gays and lesbians.
The film is about a girl who is lesbian and which her mother cannot accept. She then forces her to get married to a man.

“I am urging people to please go out in numbers and show support for our very own film shot in our location.”

“I have stories that I have written before and I am planning to release them whether as books, novels or as films.

“The film industry is tough especially if you don’t have financial backing but I am committed and determined to work very hard in making it,” she said.
