STRESS is mounting for Nomalungelo “Noma” Khumalo (22), from Pelham with the final countdown to the crowning of season 12’s Idol SA on Sunday.

If Khumalo wins she will go down in history as the third female to snatch the title in 11 seasons.

The battle lines have been drawn and the race for the top spot that was contested by thousands of other hopefuls across the country is now between Khumalo and Thami Shobode (27), from Mtubatuba.

Speaking to the Maritzburg Echoon Tuesday ahead of the finale from the Idols house in Johannesburg, Khumalo described the journey as “a dream come true”.

“I’m a believer in that everything happens for a reason, nothing is by mistake or chance. Reaching the final top two in the competition is not a coincidence. I am here for a reason and whatever happens on Sunday I believe I would have fulfilled my purpose in the competition.”

Khumalo, who matriculated from Maritzburg Christian School in 2012, was working as a student teacher before entering the competition, but she said singing has always been her passion.

“I have been singing for as long as I can remember. I was part of the church choir from a very young age. Even in high school I was known as the girl who was always singing. As a student teacher I am involved in teaching music at my school.”

She is also part of Acoustiq Assassins, a local band that was formed in 2014.

It was Khumalo’s rendition of Janelle Monae’s Prime Time during her audition in Durban that secured her spot in the hearts of millions of Idols viewers, who have kept her in the competition thus far by voting for her.

Another one of her unforgettable performances in the course of the competition was her rendition of Jennifer Hudson’s I’m Telling You, which left an indelible impression on many.

“The support from everyone has been amazing, I always have people sending me messages of support on Facebook and Twitter and I try to respond to each one. It’s all been so overwhelming, but I am eternally grateful.

“The journey has not been an easy one, but I want to thank everyone for walking hand in hand with me, this is the final stretch, we’re almost there.”

She said the highlights of the competition for her thus far have been the relationships she has formed.

“The musical exposure and knowledge of the entertainment industry that has been imparted to me are also some of my biggest highlights thus far.”

Though she plans to pursue music beyond Idols, Khumalo said she is still determined to complete her Bachelor of Education Degree she is doing at Unisa.

You’ve brought her this far now she needs you to take her further. To vote for Noma SMS 04 to 37400. Voting closes at 10pm tonight.
