THE Department of Environmental Affairs and Working on Fire (WoF) teams pledged to carry on fighting the wide spread instances of fires in the KwaZulu-Natal Province.

Last month, a number of fires were defeated by firefighters in many areas across the province.

A total of 40 fires, that burned 1 754.8 hectares, were attended by firefighters partnering with local municipalities, fire protection associations, land owners, and Ezemvelo Wildlife.

According to KwaZulu-Natal WoF assistant general manager Bongani Nhlabathi, 700 firefighters would be on standby through the winter fire season to assist in case of emergencies.

“We have experienced a higher danger index in June, and every week we have more frequent fires. Motorists must be vigilant and switch on lights when driving through areas where there is smoke,” said Nhlabathi. — Supplied.
