Five days without electricity

RICHMOND Road resident Martina Roux is at her wits end when it comes to the municipality after she went three days without electricity last week only for the lights to come back on and then go off again for another two hours.

“We call at night and are then told that the day shift will sort it out. We call during the day and then are told that the night shift will sort it out,” said an angry Roux.

Roux said that previously they had gone five days without lights and eight days without water.

“We were forced to actually go into town and buy a number of five litre water bottles so that we could have water to bath and drink,” she said.

While she is angry at being given the run around each time she phones the municipality, Roux said that she is more concerned for her neighbour, who is a young mother that must tend to her child when there’s no electricity and water.

“We want answers because this is not fair on us to go without basic needs for days on end.

“If they do not have money they must tell us and be honest so that we can take the necessary precautions,” said Roux, who added that they do have generators in place but that not everyone on their road does.

Municipal spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha did not respond to queries forwarded to her before press deadline.
