TAKING place over the weekend of July 7, the inaugural Ithemba Cup of Hope soccer extravaganza was hailed a huge success, with many people flocking to the local stadium to take part in the footballing spectacle.

Ithemba, meaning hope, was a joint venture with local ward councillor Shawn Adkins and the Ithemba organising committee, who came together in order to make the tournament possible.

All in all, six teams participated in the tournament, namely; Jacks FC, Celtic United, Pirates FC, East Street Hostel FC, Zulu Warriors FC and Re-United FC.

Each participating team belonged to the Ward 32 district, except for that of Re-United who were invited as guests due to them being winners of the recently held Easter Tournament.

The final saw Zulu Warriors FC come up against Easter Tournament winners, Re-United FC, which resulted in a 1-0 win for the Warriors, who walked away with the R 9 000 first place prize.

The owner and manager of Zulu Warriors, Mr Oscar Zulu, was overwhelmed with joy as he was presented with the wining prize and trophy during the formalities.

The winners of the tournament also walked away with the man of the match and top goal scorer awards.

“We hope that this modest but professional event will serve to revitalize sporting interest in our community, where talent abounds,” said the deputy chair of the Ithemba organizing committee Claudelle Davis.

Ward 32 councillor Shawn Adkins boasted that the event was a success which ran concurrently with the 2018 Fifa World Cup .

“Especially in the context of the current world cup, our youth were able to lift a cup of hope for their future ambitions on the world sporting stage,” said Adkins. — Supplied
