FIVE foreign nationals who were allegedly involved in house robberies and theft around Pietermaritzburg were arrested last Tuesday.

All the suspects are believed to be from Malawi and were arrested in a house in Jeffrey’s Road in Westgate.

According to Alexandra Road Police Station spokesperson Captain Kholeka Mhlongo, the Plessislaer K9 Task Team held a crime-intelligence driven operation after they received a tip-off about the five men.

“Police arrived at the address that they were given and found all the suspects.

Three of them were hiding in the ceiling. All are positively linked to house robberies that happened in Howick recently. We are investigating the possibility of them being linked to more cases of a similar nature,” she said.

During the arrest, police recovered rounds of ammunition, an unknown amount of foreign cash, R10 450 in cash, a wallet with cards and cash, three flat-screen TVs, 11 cellphones, jewellery, several sets of car keys, a camera, speakers and other items. They were charged with possession of unlicensed ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property.

The outcome of the case was not known at the time of going to print.
