FORMER members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) once again came together to celebrate the 73rd birthday of stalwart and former warrant officer Herman de Bruin at the Chistlehurst Academics and Arts premises on July 13.

With over 20 former police officers in attendance, De Bruin reflected on a career in the SAPS that began in 1965 in Pietermaritzburg.

“I spent seven years in Inchanga where I was posted in 1965 and thereafter was in Prestbury for a good 12 years of my career,” said De Bruin.

De Bruin then spent 12 years in PMB central before eventually retiring in 1997 after many meritorious years of service within the police force.

He is affectionately known as the historian among his former colleagues due to his excellent memory which most say remains the same to this day.

“His memory of vehicles utilised by various officers he worked alongside and their official registration numbers as well as names and ranks of numerous police officers living or passed on from yesteryear still baffles us,” said former police officer Logan Govender.
