Former columnist keeps Echo in his heart

2019-06-26 06:00

“MY days as an Echo contributor goes as far back as 2004. Although I was born in Umlazi, Durban my parents were transferred to Imbali in 1990, and that is where I grew up.

One of the first things we realised was the popularity of the Echo newspaper.

People would literally queue to get the newspaper at the local shop.

I was influenced by the writing style of Khaba Mkhize, Lakela Kaunda and others, so I started writing features based on my observations of what went on in society.

It was ten years after democracy and in my opinion public service had not transformed and I wrote articles on Batho Pele and the like.

I also wrote reflective articles on entrepreneurship during the time when the province was rolling out training for unemployed people to form co-operatives.

One of the most popular articles that I wrote was titled “1956 march was about women’s right to the city”, I argued in this article that the government should prioritise the right of women to housing and basic services in an integrated manner.

My love for writing for public readers has been reignited as I am inspired by a lot of historical knowledge that I am discovering in my studies for a Masters in History with UKZN.

I hope you enjoy reading my column on Youth Month. It’s good to be home.”
