A FATAL vehicle accident claimed the lives of four family members from Copesville, near Ashburton on Saturday, while another is fighting for her life in Edendale Hospital.

While driving back from a trip at Winkelspruit beach, the family’s vehicle a bus travelling in the opposite direction veered across the road and hit the car the family was travelling in.

Dolly Govender, Shanelle Govender, Hannah Padayachee and Linton Mahommed were all declared dead on the scene by the ER24 paramedics.

Sharlane Govender was quickly rushed to Edendale Hospital after being treated on site where she is in a very critical state.

“We suspect that the bus clipped the back of a bakkie while travelling to Durban and after that resulted in the bus hitting the car with the five family members head on,”

said ER24 paramedic Andrew Brown.

After hitting the car head-on, the bus then went through a roadside barrier and down an embankment injuring three passengers [from the bus] who were all taken to Northdale Hospital.

Four females and one male were in the car at the time of the accident and the family members had to be removed from the wrecked vehicle using the Jaws of Life”.

Brown described the scene as horrific and tragic and confirmed that the bus driver and bakkie driver were uninjured.
