THE Maritzburg Futsal Association (MIFA) regional league kicked off four weeks ago at Manneys Astro in Raisethorpe. The MIFA league started off with an opening tournament in which 10 teams participated, with Hugo’s United walking away as the winners. The league is currently underway with exhilarating fixtures every Sunday between noon and 3pm at Maney’s Astro. Pietermaritzburg is undoubtedly the hub of Futsal in the country as there were about eight players from Pietermaritzburg who played for the South African national team which took part in the Four Nations Cup, which saw SA, Egypt, Mozambique, and Zambia take to the field in Johannesburg over the past weekend. MIFA hopes to keep growing the game in the region and remain the hub of futsal talent in the country. Futsal is a five’aside football game which is similar to the traditional 11’aside football but with slightly different rules. It is, as many will know, a highly intense and exciting format of football. The likes of the popular Ronaldinho and Falcão are products of this code of football. MIFA operates under the auspices of the Futsal Association of South Africa (FASA) [formerly the South African Football Association (SAIFA)], the recognised custodians of Futsal in South Africa, affiliating to the South African Football Association (SAFA).
