MENTAL health care users from Pietermaritzburg Mental Health held a swimming gala on Friday at The Palms residential facility.

There were 60 participants from three protective workshops who took part in various fun races.

Protective workshops are part of a service which the organisation renders to those with mental disabilities, training them in work-related skills, personal independence and socialisation skills, in order to help them achieve their optimum level of functioning.

There are three protective workshops in Pietermaritzburg, namely the Buxton Workshop in the city centre, Inkanyezi Workshop in Imbali and MH Moosa Workshop in Northdale.

The aim of having protective workshops and exercising the employment programme is to develop the full potential of mental health care users by enabling them to acquire work related skills, work opportunities and to foster inclusion and participation in sports and recreation.

The eventual goal of the programme is to place and support suitable people with a mental disability in the open labour market for short or long term employment within any business.
