RESIDENTS of Pietermaritzburg joined arms on Sunday in honour of Mahathma Gandhi and marched through various areas of the CBD to commemorate his birthday and highlight his historic link to the Old Prison and Pietermaritzburg Railway Station.

It was at the railway station where one of Gandhi’s most significant moments happened, where he was thrown out of a train and would come to pick himself up and spark a peaceful revolution against the apartheid regime by launching the Natal Indian Congress in 1894 which would later go on to form the Congress Alliance in 1950’s with the African National Congress, The Transvaal Indian Congress and Coloured Peoples Congress.Speaking at the event Pietermaritzburg Mermorial Gandhi Committee chairperson David Gengan told the crowd of spectators and volunteers that they needed to find more people like Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.“We need to search for more Gandhis and Mandelas in our communities and be the change we want to see in the world today,” he said.
