THE Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association held a mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting event on Friday, December 13 outside the City Hall.

At the event, Msunduzi Municipality Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla said that the time of the year has descended upon us where families come together in celebration of their achievements, spending joyous moments together at the end of a year that was filled with challenges, triumphs and losses.

“On behalf of the Msunduzi Municipality Council, I wish residents, stakeholders, businesses, and social partners of the municipality a merry Christmas and prosperous new year,” said Thebolla.

The mayor also explained that, as the council, they have had their fair share of challenges, triumphs and losses, mentioning that it has generally been a difficult year because of heavy rainfalls, fires and road accidents in the city.

Thebolla went on to describe this time of year as the perfect opportunity to reflect on the year-long challenges we have all faced.

“It is also the period [where we] open our hearts to those who are less fortunate and cannot enjoy the festivities of the season.

“On a lighter note, as the newly-elected leadership of the council, we would like thank you for talking with us as we continue with our mammoth task of [making] resident’s hopes and aspirations of better service delivery a reality,” said Thebolla.

The mayor emphasised that the new year should be different from the previous years in terms of road fatalities.

Thebolla said they are concerned about the high number of lives lost on the road due to the behaviour of other road users, saying: “Let us reach our holiday destinations safely.”

“We call upon people to refrain from drinking and driving and to observe the rules of the road,” said the mayor.

In concluding, Thebolla said: “Let us be cautious of those who take advantage of the festive season by committing criminal activities. Be custodians of your neighbour’s homes if possible.”
