GOING on 11 years since its inception, local NGO Breakthru Community Action (BCA) will once again be hosting their holiday programme for children this July.

The BCA works within communities and contributes to preventing the degradation of neighbourhoods as well as making the neighbourhood a better place to live in.

The programme seeks to invite all children between the ages of four and 14 to participate.

This year’s theme focuses on addiction and helping children deal with associated issues.

Hosted by the New Zion Church at 43 Boom Street, the initiative regularly attracts large numbers of participants with the annual averages being about 600 children.

Last year it accommodated a total of 800 children. Children from across Pietermaritzburg are invited to attend the event which seeks to teach various life skills and lessons.

Volunteer, Ryan Mckenzie, said that many volunteers throughout the year run weekly ‘kids zones’ in various areas in Pietermaritzburg.

“At the holiday club, we teach life skills, provide the children with food, we have a sports day, a concert for them to perform in and lots of other fun activities,” said Mckenzie.

Most of the members involved in the program reside in the areas that they target such as Northdale, Eastwood and Woodlands and therefore are able to transfer skills and empowerment to the children within their community.

The programme runs from June 25 to 29 and those interested in attending or helping out can contact Thandi at 082 488 5603.
