PIETERMARITZBURG Girls’ High School (GHS) is celebrating its 100th birthday in 2020.According to GHS principal Andrew Graaf, last year, when GHS celebrated its 99th birthday, the school reached out to its former head girl Norma Hugo who had also turned 99.Hugo, who is based in Cape Town was sent a bunch of flowers to make her birthday special.“To say thank you, she hand made bookmarks, writing on the back of them and sticking dried flowers on the other side. She had them laminated and posted to GHS. They were given out to our prefects, upon her request. Our head prefect then called her to say thank you,” said Graaf.Appreciating the bookmarks, GHS 2020 head girl Paige Raw said: “Each and everyone of us is beyond honoured to have Mrs Hugo, the head girl of 1937, involved and part of our lives today. She certainly leaves a legacy with the prefects of 2020. We will, no doubt, look after these thoughtful bookmarks with the knowledge of the history and love which they hold.” The principal highlighted that it was rather unfortunate that Hugo is now frail and cannot travel because the school would have been honoured to host her for the school’s centenary celebrations.GHS will turn 100-years-old in August this month. In celebration of the century, Graaf said the school is hoping to reflect on how far they have come taking in consideration the success that has been achieved.“When sitting under the trees with the girls, I remind them that we now enjoy shade in the school because of the trees that were planted 100 years ago. I also tell them that the time to plant trees is now so that those who come after us can enjoy something that we have done,” said Graaf. In concluding, the principal said, as they start the new century they are looking for ways that will not only benefit the school and the girls, but also those who will follow.
