PIETERMARITZBURG Girls’ High School hosted its first indaba in celebration of Youth Day on Saturday, inviting various schools in the surrounding area to discuss issues that are affecting the youth.

Hosting up to five schools at the indaba, pupils were allowed to engage in stimulating conversations which helped in facing their problems they deal with at school.

Former Girls’ High head pupil Nozipho Mbanjwa, who is now a global moderator, helped ensure smooth proceedings at the young people’s indaba.

Many major issues were raised such as racism and discrimination, along with the hardships the pupils have had to face while dealing with these injustices.

GHS principal Andrew Graaf marvelled at the levels of maturity the pupils displayed when engaging with one another and said that the reason for the indaba was to provide a safe space for the pupils to voice their thoughts about serious issues and to possibly try to find a solution for those problems.

“Seeing these pupils engage with one another and the understand that they have, show how times have changed.

“These pupils have a voice and have a right to be heard and acknowledged,” said Graaf.
