Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School is a committed member of the Wildlands Recycling for Life initiative.

Pupil and staff at GHS collect recyclable materials from their homes and bring it to the recycling village at school. Internal competitions are held by the GHS Recycling Society for the class that collects the most materials each term.

In 2017, Wildlands, with support from Nedbank and South32, collected 929 875 kg of recycling from 123 schools in Wildlands’ Sustainable Schools Network.

GHS collected 15 386 kg of recyclable materials this past year for the programme.

Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School Grade 11 pupil Damini Parshutam (16) swam her first Midmar 8 Mile recently, raising R24 000 for Pink Drive.

Damini has participated in the Midmar Mile six times but wanted to challenge herself this year and signed up for the 8 Mile swim.

“I wanted to do something for a good cause. The ladies at the Pink Drive are so empowering and listening to their stories always amazes me so I wanted to take on the challenge and doing it for a cause made it even more worth it,” she said.

Damini started her fundraising in November last year and managed to raise the required R10 000 in a week. “I am so thankful to all my family and friends who supported me during this challenge. I knew I was ready for it and by the time the last mile came I was filled with excitement and adrenalin. I am so glad I was able to be a part of the 8 Mile club and encourage anyone who can do it to give it a try,” she said.
