SCORES of Pietermaritzburg devotees could be seen spectating and walking across a fire pit as they partook in the annual three-hour fire walking ceremony at the Sri Siva Soobramoniar and Marieammen Temples on Good Friday.

Devotees who participated in the fire walking ceremony began preparing themselves 10 days in advance, abstaining from things they deemed as socially evil and other worldly pleasures while maintaining a disciplined lifestyle.

Friday saw the lighting of a fire using 15 tons of wattle and thorns trees burned down to embers for use from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm.

Devotees who witnessed the lighting of the traditional fire then made their way to the banks of the Dorpspruit where many went into a trance while receiving spiritual blessings.

Many devotees inserted long needles into their cheeks and tongues while walking over the hot coals, stating that walking the fire was a way to show that they were thankful for having their misfortunes removed from their lives.

The fire department remained on site and kept an active eye on the proceedings to ensure that fire walkers were safe during the ceremony.
