GRACE College won first place in the second round of the 2016 BDO Inter-Schools Quiz for the Pietermaritzburg region at St Anne’s Diocesan College in Hilton recently.

There was fierce competition from 36 schools from Durban and Pietermaritzburg taking part in the seventh instalment of the competition run by the Durban office of international audit, advisory and tax firm, BDO South Africa.

The winning team of four Grade 11 pupils from Grace College notched up 69 points in the general knowledge quiz, narrowly beating St Charles College into second place. Carl Brann, Atarah Maharaj, Leanne Kobus, Kelly du Preez and Lance Robertson shared their excitement at their win.

The first and second placed teams will go through to the final championship round, along with the top two teams from each of three other regional rounds, to be held at Clifton College on 5 May.

The overall quiz champions earn the right to nominate a disadvantaged school to win R10 000 worth of books courtesy of community-minded book store Books&Books and new sponsor, Kip McGrath education and pupil enrichment centres helping hundreds of thousands of children improve their English, reading, writing, comprehension and maths skills.

Participating Pietermaritzburg schools this year included St Charles School, Epworth Independent High School for Girls, St Johns DSG, Michaelhouse, St Nicholas School, Pietermaritzburg Girls High School, Hilton College, The Wykeham Collegiate, Grace College, St Anne’s Diocesan College and Maritzburg College.

Last year Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High won first place in the Pietermaritzburg regional round. - Supplied.
