SUNDAY, November 12 will see the Edendale community come alive again with the hosting of the annual road-running attraction, the Greater Edendale Race. The event is a Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) CSI initiative, hosted in conjunction with the Msunduzi Municipality, the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association and partners. Race organisers expect 1000 participants to converge on the FNB Wadley Stadium for the event, and plans are being put in place to ensure an exciting 10km race. Registration is at Comrades House at 18 Connaught Road, Scottsville, weekdays between 8am and 4.30pm.Prize money totalling more than R21 000 is up for grabs in various categories, with the first prize being R3 000 for the first man and first woman home respectively. The first three walkers, men and women, over the finish line will also be rewarded. Additionally, a medal will be presented to all finishers, as well as T-shirts for the first 600.Due to safety and logistical concerns, the event will no longer include a five kilometre schools challenge. Race convenor, Macdonald Chitja says: “We are saddened to announce that as the organising committee, we have had to make a difficult decision to not continue with the hosting of the five kilometre schools challenge. It has become apparent that the route is not conducive for the safe running of the little ones, as well as other logistical challenges.“We will, however, look at other options to ensure an exciting day for schoolchildren who are too young to participate in the 10 kilometre race.”Safety and security is overseen by SAPS and the local traffic police, as well as 60 marshals and additional security guards. Entry for the 10km race is R40 for licensed athletes and participants must be at least 14 years old to run it. Temporary licenses will be available at the registration desk for R15 for runners who are not licensed members of a running club. The event is run under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations, Athletics South Africa and KwaZulu-Natal Athletics. CMA Chairperson, Sifiso Nzuza invites runners to be part of the event. “This is a powerful Comrades CSI initiative that contributes to many young ones being exposed to the joys of running. I would like to invite Comrades runners to join us for the 11th edition of the Greater Edendale Race on November 12.”- Supplied.
