Grey’s Hospital goes green, and saves

2016-09-07 06:00

GREY’S Hospital is joining a “green” initiative that will see the facility improve its impact on the environment. A press statement by Pietermaritzburg environmental group groundWork and Grey’s said the hospital was the latest health-care facility to join the internationally recognised Global Green and Healthy Hospitals initiative.

Grey’s Hospital CEO Dr Kandolo Benoit Bilenge said they joined the initiative in May as they wanted to “make a difference to the lives we serve”. The initiative already has over 600 members from 38 countries, representing over 20 000 hospitals and health centres.

Through the initiative the health facilities commit to reducing their ecological footprint and promoting environmental health. South Africa has 36 health-care facilities from KZN, the Western Cape and Gauteng belonging to Global Green.

These facilities commit to at least two of the 10 environmentally friendly and climate sensitive goals listed by the initiative.

“We chose energy and waste management as our goals because we felt we could make a significant impact, as a hospital, in control of these two contributors to environmental and
climate change,” said Bilenge.

Through control of electricity use in the hospital and the doctors’ quarters, electricity consumption decreased by over 220 000kWh between January and June.

Staff training and awareness-building of waste management at the hospital resulted in a reduction of 3,4% in waste with health-care risks, saving an average of R4 000 a month between May and July. groundWork is co-ordinating Global Green membership for the African region.
