After banding together as a community to clean up the Woodlands Grounds, community activist and former Sharks and Springbok rugby player Gavin Hoskins expressed his disappointment at the fact that just three months later the grounds have started to deteriorate again.

“We came together with the help of a few individuals and cleaned this place thoroughly, but unfortunately the municipality has failed to assist us in maintaining this grounds as we see the walls continue to fall down.

The fences and metal sheets are being stolen, the youth are still using these facilities to smoke and drink all the while this huge facility only has three security guards who often request for assistance from the community watch, which shows the urgency on the part of the municipality,” said Hoskins.

He said the community had big plans for the Woodlands Grounds and that it was in their best interest that they apply pressure on the municipality in order for these plans to become a reality.

“As someone who has seen the potential of sport to change lives first hand, I just want our children to have the same opportunity as us who played on these fields and from there went on to excel for our province and country,” said Hoskins.

The grounds were cleaned at the end of August for the first time in 20 years and has since then been on the decline with various bottles of cough syrup in plain site along with other pollutants as well as damaged infrastructure.

The municipality failed to respond to queries directed to them before print deadline.
