THE Pietermaritzburg Gymnastics Academy was the best-performing KZN gymnastics club at the National Gym Games held in Cape Town recently, bringing home a total of 21 medals.

The club’s top-scoring gymnasts were Joane’ Coetzee, winning a bronze medal on the vault in a very competitive level five section with a score of 9,05; John Oliver (10), who takes part in the club’s high-performance section called class two, was placed fourth overall and won two gold medals on the floor and the parallel bar with a score of 9,6.

Keegan Thornton-Dibb was place seventh overall in level six and won four apparatus medals, getting a silver medal on rings and high bar and bronze on the pommel and parallel bar.

David Cockbain, who took part in the level eight section, was placed second overall and won six apparatus medals, winning bronze on high bar, silver on floor and gold on vault, parallel bar, pommel and rings.

Anderson Worth took part in level nine and won gold overall and six apparatus medals, been awarded silver on rings and high bar and winning gold on floor, vault, pommel and parallel bar.

John, Anderson and David were selected to go forward and represent South Africa at the region five competition in December in Pretoria.

The senior coaching staff of Suzanne Pegler, Tracy Erikson, Natalia Barthorpe, Linee’ Havinga, Ronelle Haines, Devon Cronwright and Sherri Page put in many hours with the gymnasts and the results can be attributed to the hard work put in by both the coaches and gymnasts.

The club has had a fantastic year on both the boys’ and girls’ side and is growing from strength to strength as it celebrates its 50th birthday this year. — Supplied.
