AFTER winning the recent SA Cup Mountain Biking Series in Nelspruit, Wykeham Collegiate pupil Hannah Elliott is now sitting pretty at the number one spot in the country for her age group.

Hailing from Clarendon, the 11-year old also took part in the ROAG series, coming out first in her age group and first for the women overall.

Hannah, who has been cycling since she was four years old, said that it all began when her dad bought her a bike.

“From the time I was four, when my dad bought me my first bike, I have been cycling,” said Hannah.

Expressing her feelings of proudness for her daughter, mother Claudette Elliott said that Hannah has worked very hard and that she has done extremely well thus far.

“She started racing competitively at eight years old after attending a birthday party. She saw them preparing for the Spur Schools Mountain Bike League in Cascades and asked if she could join,” said the proud mom.

Ever since her entry to the Spur Schools Mountain Bike League, there has been no looking back for Hannah.

“She then began training and started competing in various mountain biking races across Kwa-Zulu Natal and South Africa,” said Claudette.

Hannah said that the SA Cup Mountain Biking Series was a long event, filled with excitement, which made it worth the long ride. “To win it was a dream for me and I am happy to have the support of my friends and family which motivates me to do well,” she said.

Claudette said that their family was very proud of Hannah but maintained that they will not let her success get to her head, and that she will remain humble in the face of success.

“Hannah has worked really hard and is reaping the rewards having won the series,” said Claudette. Hannah said that she hoped to one day participate in, and win, the Olympics as she continues her mountain biking journey.
