THE fourth annual Happy Earth Festival, where more than 20 well-established environmental, education organisations offer hands-on activities for primary and high-school pupils, will be held at the KwaZulu-Natal Botanical Gardens from 14 to 15 April.

Participating organisations include the KZN Museum, EKZN Wildlife, SANBI, WESSA, DUCT, KPCA, Karkloof Conservancy, Working of Fire, Botanical Society and UKZN.

As a new addition, Pietermaritzburg Agency for Community Social Action (Pacsa) is offering a film festival especially for high school pupils on both days.

The aim of the event is to give environmental education a platform for teachers, pupils and the public to learn and be inspired. Many schools do not have access to green spaces and cannot afford extensive outings.

The event offers the unique opportunity to explore all the different aspects of environmental education from eco-systems to experiential learning of hearing, feeling and touching. It is not only a way to teach pupils the value and complexity of nature, but also for them to have fun and connect with nature.

The festival is free, but registration is essential for participating schools. For more information, contact Dr Friederike Voigt at 082 779 6766 or email happyearthforum@ gmail.com.

Rotary, Sunshine Bread, Bluff Meats Supply, Fairfield Dairy, SANBI and the Botanical Society is thanked for their sponsorship. - Supplied.
