TO ensure that Harry Gwala Stadium and the athletics track is used fully and management, operations and events are monitored, the Msunduzi Municipality will introduce management plans for both structures.

This was noted at the Executive Committee (Exco) meeting.

The municipality noted that the stadium and athletics track are a prominent investment for the city as they will accommodate entertainment and sports events. It wants the stadium to be managed by a private company and that school sports events will be hosted at the stadium.

Funds generated from events will go to the municipality, not the operator.

The management plans of the stadium and athletic track include the a ppointment of staff to fulfil obligations as laid out in the agreement, building management system, site security, management of events, arranging technical stand-by staff for events, managing parking, accreditation of visitors and media representatives, ticketing services, cleaning services, pitch management, landscaping, rental of facilities, marketing of the facility, attraction of resident football, ancillary services, hospitality areas, beverage sales, suite sales and budgets.

Msunduzi mayor Chris Ndlela said the developments at the athletics track must be finished soon.

“We have been advised to tighten our belts, but nothing stops us from approaching our big brothers and sisters for this particular project to be completed.

“We are mindful of the economic conditions and we urge you to go out of your way and see whether you can source those funds,” said Ndlela addressing executive members.

Exco member Bill Lambert said this will be an iconic attraction for Pietermaritzburg. “

“This is something very special. I think it will be an iconic development for Pietermaritzburg and will be a landmark. It will leave a legacy for generations to come,” he said.

Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said that due to the athletics track and the Harry Gwala Stadium located close to one another, there was a need to combine the management plans of the two facilities.

“Currently, we don’t have proper management for Harry Gwala Stadium and we don’t want to experience the same when the athletics track is completed. The view of the management of the facilities was that due to the proximity you need to have one management plan for both facilities,” said Nkosi.

The community services department will advertise for a suitable stadium management service provider to manage operations, events and general management of the facilities.
