IF you love soul, RnB, smooth jazz and deep house, then you need to make sure you head to the Mayor’s Garden in Alexandra Park on Saturday, April 14.

Soul Revolution, presented by Castle Lite, Hennessy, Belvedere and Athimthende Events, is the first musical event of its kind in Pietermaritzburg.

Event organiser Dudu Xulu said the inspiration for the event came from attending other concerts, most of which only catered for the youth. She wanted to create something different, something that would cater for a slightly older generation, but still attract young people.

“In organising the event, we looked around for people who listen to the abovementioned music genres, and most are people 30 or above.

“Then we looked for what we call ‘love movement’ deejays who play love and soulful music in the region and we asked them to play on the day,” she said.

Xulu hopes Soul Revolution will become an ongoing series of events. She is also planning other concerts in the city, with her next project set to feature well-known South African hip-hop artists.

“The hip-hop event will not be part of the series of Soul Revolution, but a different project we want to launch in the city following the Soul Revolution series.

“We want to expose local talents to big South African brands and that is why Soul Revolution will also feature and support local artists such as Zamo Khumalo, DJ Linda and more,” she said.

The following DJs will headline the event:

• Msizi Shembe, who started his radio career back in 1995. He has worked for Yfm, P4 Radio and Gagasi FM. He now hosts Metro FM’s Sunday Soul Therapy between noon and 3 pm on Sundays.

• Collen Zondo hosts the Gagasi FM Music Sessions RnB on Wednesdays between 8 pm and 10 pm as well as Urban Soul on Sundays between 10 am and 2 pm. Zondo is also a motivational speaker, voiceover artist and an entrepreneur.

• Mondli Mzizi is an award-winning stand-up comedian and programme director for events and corporate functions.

• DJ LeSoul hosts The Hangover on Saturdays between 1 am and 4 am on Gagasi FM. DJ LeSoul is also a club DJ, design artist and PR manager for Fitness Gym.

• Sentle Lehoko hosts Metro FM’s The Romantic Repertoire on Sundays from 3 pm to 6 pm.
