Help raise cancer awareness

THE Cancer Association of SA (CANSA) in Pietermaritzburg will be hosting a Gijima For CANSA 5km family fun walk/run on Sunday, February 2 at the Voortrekker High School sports grounds.

CANSA community mobiliser Heidi Jansen said they are hosting the family fun walk on February 2 to commemorate World Cancer Day, which will be observed on Tuesday, February 4.

World Cancer Day is observed internationally to raise awareness on cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment.

“We are [calling on] all Pietermaritzburgers to get active, healthy and have some fun with the whole family. At the same time, communities will be contributing to a local organisation that has been educating the public and offering support services to cancer patients and their families,” said Jansen, who added that this fun run is aimed at creating awareness about living a healthy lifestyle and the realisation that everyone can make a difference in the fight against cancer.

Registration for the run will be from 6.30 am to 8.45 am. There will also be a warm-up Zumba session from 7.45 am to 8 am.

The cost to participate in the event is R50 per adult and R30 for children under 12 years old.

There are goodie bags available for the first 50 entries and free clinical breast examinations for registered entrants. There will also be lucky draw prizes. Breakfast stalls are still available.
