CAROLYN Steyn started 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day five years ago, when she was challenged in December 2013 to make 67 blankets before Nelson Mandela Day on July 18, 2014. Upon realising she would not be able to do this on her own, she tasked like-minded “knitwits” to help her. 67 Blankets has now spread worldwide where woollen, handmade blankets are created and handed out each winter to people in need of warmth and comfort. The group in Pietermaritzburg has been running for two years now under the ambassadorship of Shareen Scott. They recently held a red and white second birthday party where a Pietermaritzburg inspired blanket was unveiled. The Pietermaritzburg group is always looking for help with making blankets, and for wool donations. An easy way to contribute is to knit or crochet 20 x 20cm squares which are all joined together.
