THE matric class of 2019 achieved an overall pass rate of 81,3% — the highest ever.

KZN’s overall pass rate was also 81,3% — ranking it fifth among the nine provinces. The leading district in KZN was Ugu, with a pass rate of 86,3%. Umgungundlovu achieved a pass rate of 82.8 %.

Free State led the way with a pass rate of 88,4%, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced last night.

She said all nine provinces achieved pass rates above 70%.

Gauteng, with an overall rate of 87,2%, had all three top-performing districts that achieved more than 90% passes. None of the country’s 75 education districts achieved a less than 60% pass rate. After Free State and Gauteng came the North West with 86,8% and the Western Cape with 82,3%. Mpumalanga was sixth with 80,3%. More girls than boys wrote the exams, and girls achieved more distinctions and Bachelor’s degree passes than boys. Pupils at Western Cape schools earned the most distinctions, while the most Bachelor’s passes were earned in Gauteng.

Motshekga said exam certification body Umalusi found no irregularities with the exams.

The minister also announced the top three achievers in various subjects, and at schools in the five quintiles of financial support.

The country’s top matric overall was Madelein Dippenaar from Paarl Gimnasium High School in the Western Cape.

While making the matric announcement, Motshekga also explained that the General Education Certificate, which caused an uproar last year, is not a school leaving certificate at the end of Grade 9, but enables pupils to choose their best future education path.
