IT’S goodbye to icy, dark, winter morning escapades and a warm hello to the toasty, golden, summer trails of KwaZulu-Natal.The KZN Trail Running Summer Series kicks off on Sunday, November 3 at Dusi Trails in Ashburton, a spectacular venue that offers a truly memorable outdoor adventure just 10 minutes from Pietermaritzburg and 20 minutes from Hillcrest. Dense valley bushveld, indigenous grasslands strewn with Acacias and aloes are food for the soul, and the trails that cut through the terrain a tonic for the body.An added excitement is the possibility of glimpsing some of the native wildlife or inhabitant birds. All three events in the Summer Series offer three different distances to choose from; there is one to suit almost every fitness level, age and ability. Dusi Trails has a 6 km, 12 km and 20 km to choose from — in general, the short distance is a great introduction to trail running and in most cases is suitable for children (it is suggested you never run further than your age) and families. The middle distance is slightly more challenging, sometimes a bit more technical, and is a good bridging event for those looking to up their game, while the long distance is mostly very challenging in terms of distance and technical terrain. Walkers are welcomed on the short and medium distance events. The events are geared towards full family involvement and the atmosphere in the race village around the start/finish area is always vibey and festive with plenty to see, eat, drink and do! There will be a great choice of food and drink (including the best coffee and craft cordials), a well-stocked Pop Up trail gear shop with expert advice, massages, and awesome lucky draw prizes up for grabs during prize giving… so participants are encouraged to hang around and enjoy the fully-loaded trail experience. The KZNTR KidZone will be in action for kids two years and older. This is a complimentary service for parents who are participating, allowing them to hit the trails with peace of mind. Children will be under the supervision of experienced child minders who will provide them with stimulating entertainment and games. The second event in the Summer Series takes place at Honey Trails in Monteseel on November 17, with the final event taking place at Hilton College on December 1.Pre-entries for Dusi Trails close at noon on Friday, November 1 but entries will be available on the day as well (late entry surcharge applies). For more information, and to enter all of these events, visit the website www.kzntrailrunning.co.za — Supplied.
