THE Msunduzi Hospice celebrated 35 years of caring for the greater Pietermaritzburg area by hosting a small gathering, inclusive of past and current staff, volunteers and supporters, this past Thursday.

Officials from the Department of Health attended as well as the district manager for health.

Msunduzi Hospice Fundraiser Tanya Roux said that the occasion was a way for them to reflect on their work over the last 35 years but also to look forward to what is to come.

“The occasion was an opportunity to reflect on the work that has been done and the significant achievements over the last 35 years, but also an opportunity to take note of future challenges and opportunities,” she said.

Hospice highlighted the support granted to them by the Pietermaritzburg community throughout the evening.

“The Pietermaritzburg community’s support is greatly encouraged as we look forward to our future opportunities,” said Roux.

Marking the upcoming 100th birthday celebration of political icon Nelson Mandela, in conjunction with the work that Hospice is doing in ensuring a difference in the lives of the individuals that they help, a quote by Mandela was used to summarize Hospice’s work.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead,” quoted Roux from one of Mandela’s famous speeches.
