A GESTURE of appreciation was shown to volunteers of Msunduzi Hospice on Friday, September 6. Hospice staff and management hosted a certificate handover and appreciation event to acknowledge the volunteers who contribute so much to the organisation by reaching out to many people and those who make Msunduzi Hospice alive in the hearts of the community. The event’s theme was “The Pietermaritzburg I grew up in”. Guest speaker Carol McCallen gave a talk on the history of Pietermaritzburg. During the event, free TB screenings were offered to volunteers. Heidi Collyer, hospice palliative care manager, also presented a talk on TB infection control and universal precautions. Hospice chair Praveen Jagmohan said volunteers are the heart and blood of ospice. Volunteers were also awarded with certificates ranging from five to 25 years of service.“May our volunteers know the true satisfaction that comes from helping others less fortunate than themselves. May they feel the gratitude in our hearts for all the good that they’ve done. The appreciation we feel for them is truly second to none. Thank you for your time, thank you sincerely from the bottom of our hearts,” said Jugmohan.Although Jugmohan said they would like more people volunteering at Hospice, he still encouraged many to volunteer their time to the community and in any other organisation; not necessarily at hospice.
