THE Mkhize family of Sobantu are lucky to be alive after their house collapsed while they were sleeping inside it over the weekend.

The family of four, comprising Zanele Mkhize and her three children, said that this is not the first time that their house has collapsed.

According to Mkhize the house collapsed last year but they continued to live in it, while still dilapidated, because they had nowhere else to go.

“ I am not working, I do peace jobs for people and I can’t afford to build a house. This is not the first time that my house has collapsed, it happened last year and I used a curtain to block the opening at the back of the house because it [opening] wasn’t that big. When it happened again over the weekend, I was forced to use a wardrobe to block the hole and the roof from falling. This does not help because, when it rains, the house gets flooded. We fear for our lives. The whole house is cracking and we don’t know what will happen if it collapses again. This time we were very lucky that we came out alive because we were sleeping in another room.

“Every time we wake we thank God that we are still alive because anything can happen to this house.

“We are not different from people who are homeless. What breaks my heart is seeing my children growing up in this situation but, unfortunately, there is nothing that I can do,” she said.

Mkhize said sometimes she feels like giving up but she tries to be strong for her children.

“Sometimes I think that maybe I have bad luck. I am really struggling. We survive on grant money and me doing washing for my neighbours. I really need someone to help, for the sake of my children. Even if it is a one room house I will appreciate it,” she said.
