How hospice helps communities

2019-10-02 06:01

IN PREPARATION for World Hospice and Palliative Care Day on October 12, with hospice not planning to host an event for the day, Msunduzi Hospice CEO Warren Oxford-Huggett decided to address the assumption that hospice only cares for cancer patients.

According to Oxford-Huggett, there is confusion in the community regarding the services offered by the hospice.

“The Msunduzi Hospice Association seeks to provide and promote holistic quality care for all people living with a life-threatening illness within the Msunduzi health district,” said Oxford-Huggett.

The CEO emphasised that the association’s mission is to create a centre of excellence which provides and promotes quality of life, dignity in death, and bereavement support for patients and families faced with a life-threatening illness.

“We do this through direct patient care, education, effective management systems, advocacy, training, and the empowerment of networking partners,” said Oxford-Huggett.

The CEO described hospice as a body that does not have an in-patient unit but cares for people in their homes or in a hospital situation, if that becomes inevitable.

“Our core objective is to provide quality palliative care to patients and their families; to promote awareness of palliative care and to influence policies that would advance palliative care; and to develop strategic partnerships and networks with other organisations who could promote and provide quality palliative care,” said Oxford-Huggett.

The theme for this year’s World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is: “My Care, My Right.”

The theme aims to communicate that palliative care can be demanded by the public — and that, together, every person impacted by a life-limiting illness can influence their policy makers to prioritise palliative care.
