WE use smartphones for just about everything nowadays. Phone calls, messaging, e-mail, organisation, gaming, transport, shopping, socialising —there’s an app for everything.

And now, phones are venturing into the world of personal and home security.

Automate your security

While it has become a trend in the wider world, home automation has taken a bit longer to catch on in South Africa.

The technology works by attaching signal sending and receiving devices to appliances. These can then be controlled remotely, either through a browser interface or an app.

Fidelity ADT is now one of the major drivers of this technology, and offers a number of products to allow you to control everything, from your lights to your coffee machine.

But home automation can also have benefits for your home security. CCTV cameras, for instance, can be controlled remotely, allowing you to check on your home from the other side of the planet if you’d like.

The possibilities go further, though. ADT’s automation solutions extend to its security alarms, and even let you control access to your home remotely.

With a bit of work, you can turn your phone into a security control centre. And that’s just for the home.

Finding your way in the world

So your smartphone is now able to control not only your toaster, but virtually your entire home security system. What about when you’re not at home?

Well, there’s an app for that too.

Fidelity ADT’s FindU app is a personal security solution on your phone. It gives you access to emergency services when you need them, with GPS located alerts bringing the cavalry when you’re in trouble.

Along with the ability to call for help, the app has a journey function, a time-delayed meeting feature and a man-down feature for when you’re working in potentially hazardous environments.

These features, combined with the home automation solutions available, mean your phone isn’t just for selfies anymore. It’s an all-in-one security solution. —
