‘I have a dream to honour our heroes’

2017-04-19 06:02

SOME might say I am imitating American civil right activist, Martin Luther King Jr, in his famous speech “I have a dream”, but I today I will talk about my “long cherished dream”.

As a passionate Ward 34 resident I feel our area is one of the greatest and most influential one in the city.

Our ward has produced many big names and professionals who are in top positions in various professions, especially when it comes to sport.

Eastwood (Ward 34) has produced players who went on to play in the PFL, NSL, PSL and national teams.

Some will remember when Shaun Donnely played for Jomo Cosmos, Umtata Bush Bucks and AmaZulu.

Other former Eastwood youngsters Shaun Morrison and Rowan Dolphin played for SA U17, U20 and U23.

Arthur Bartman joined Kaizer Chiefs, and Cyril “Boboy” Booysen was recruited by Manning Rangers.

Our midfield maestro and former Eastwood Secondary School pupil Enver Wiltwer played for Free State Stars, Chippa United and is currently with Royal Eagles (NFD), to name a few.

On the political turf and in the government sector we are also presented fairly well because the current National Prosecution Authority (NPA) boss Advocate Shaun Abrahams has his roots in Eastwood.

However, to explain my dream, there are a handful of good people who deserve to be told “well done” and officially recognised.

My dream is to officially launch our annual Ward 34 Community Awards at Eastwood Civic Centre on July 29 at 6pm.

The aim of these awards is to pay respect to great residents in various categories and officially honour them.

In few weeks time I will be meeting community leaders, religious institutions, community organisations, ward committees and other parties in order to form a special task team to oversee potential nominees.

I am open to new suggestions and ideas and the business sector that want to come on board.
