WHEN one door closes, another opens, these are the words that Reanne David has lived by and words that have helped mould her into an up-and-coming disk jockey (DJ) sensation who has played across multiple venues in South Africa and alongside many talented veterans of the music industry.

Going by the name, “DJ Rea”, 19-year-old David has played in Johannesburg, Durban and Pietermaritzburg, to name a few, while meeting household names such as DJ Dino Bravo, Deon Govender (ECR), Warrick Frank (ECR), Neil Green (ECR), Ryan The Deejay (5FM), Ameeth Shah (Red Bull 3 Style 2018 SA champion) and many more.

After not getting into the course that she originally wanted to study, it was a chance encounter with another DJ which set her on her current musical path and gave her a chance to play her first DJ set at a local club.

“A DJ by the name of Azhruddin Mahomed (DJ Zazoo) got into contact with me and offered to teach me more about deejaying at a local club in PMB called FBI Urban Lifestyle (behind Sticky Fingers). He was the only DJ that took the time to teach me,” said David.

David said that was tough to get into the industry at first because she barely got paid for any of her gigs but that did not stop her because she loved what she was doing and had a passion for it, so she worked hard to better herself through the exposure.

Now currently studying towards her Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communication at Varsity College (PMB), David says that she one day hopes to be on the radio.

“The BACC degree that I am studying is so fitting to my passion of deejaying because it involves being in the corporate and business environment.

“I am working towards getting into a radio station one day where I can impact, motivate and inspire the youth,” said David.

Having played at some of the biggest venues around, David says that some of the highlights of her career as a DJ have been playing at La Vue (floating restaurant), playing in JHB for a crowd of approximately 800 people, and meeting her idol Deon Govender.

Currently running a business whereby she provides sound, photography and other services for various types of functions and events, David says she one day hopes to reach out and inspire the youth to fight towards their dreams.
