“MY family is going to enjoy Christmas this year. I can now spoil them,” said John Chonco, also known as PMB’s “ice-cream man”, after he received his motorbike, repaired and ready for the road to sell ice-creams, after two years.

Chonco has been selling ice cream from a cooler box ever since his bike broke four months ago. He had to use public transport to get to various venues in order to keep his business in operation.

The popular ice-cream man sells at Midmar, Alexandra Park and Pietermaritzburg events.

Aleks Schonborn from Mezzanine World in Mkondeni came to his rescue and offered to fix Chonco’s motorbike.

Chonco told Maritzburg Fever he didn’t believe Schonborn when he promised to fix his motorbike.

“He is an old customer who always buys ice cream from me and we often see each other at Midmar Dam.

“When he saw me carrying a cooler-box on my shoulder, he asked me where my motorbike was. I told him it was broken.”

Schonborn said he didn’t like seeing Chonco battling and offered to pay for the repairs. “He took my contact details and my home address and told me that he would send someone to fetch my bike to repair it.”

Chonco collected his motorbike from the repair shop last Thursday and said his life is changing for the better.

“Words fail me about how I can thank Aleks. My business was suffering without transport because public transport was limiting me.

“He has really shown ubuntu. My children are so excited that I will be able to spoil them again.

“I hope other people take this [gesture] from him and help people where they can. This shows we are united,” he said.

Schonborn said he has known Chonco since he was a young boy at school.

“I’ve been his customer for 20 years.

“I went to Michael Gillit from Rocket Racing PMB and we rebuilt the whole motorbike together.

“I am happy to get John back on his motorcycle,” he said.

Schonborn said was pleased to assist Chonco as his company is always looking for an opportunity to assist entrepreneurs, who want to grow.
