IMBALI Unit BB4’s self-taught pencil artist made the city proud when he won an award at the KwaZulu-Natal Young Achievers Awards held in Durban on Saturday.

Nkanyiso Madondo won in the category of visual arts.

Speaking to Echo, he said this award is for everyone who supported him and his work since he started drawing in 2002.

“I feel so honoured and blessed to have won this award. It means a lot to me especially because it is my first award.

I never expected to win it but with God’s grace I won and I am grateful. The competition was very tough, especially for me because I use only pencil to draw.

When I was announced as a winner I had mixed emotions, I was shocked and excited at the same time. My mother was so happy and that was everything to me,” he said.

Madondo said he hopes this award will help him get sponsors and be recognised.

“I have been doing everything on my own since I started. I only received support from my community members and other people around the city.

“I really never thought that I would go as far as winning an award with my talent and thanks to Echo. If Echo did not publish a story about my work most people would not have known about my talent and I possibly would not have been nominated for this award,” he said.

Madondo said what makes these awards more special to him is that they are made for youngsters who are making a difference or who inspire others, saying: “I want to use my talent not only for my benefit but also to be an inspiration to other people who have a love for pencil drawing. I want them to know that you can go far with this kind of art.”
