Imbali youth raise awareness about abuse

2018-12-12 06:01

IN commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism For No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, Christ Revelation Church (CRC) youth in Imbali Unit 18 will host a faith walk on December 8.

The walk will start at 9am at Ebhodini, in Imbali Unit 18, and ends at Imbali Unit 18 Sports grounds.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign is a national campaign against women and child abuse that started on November 25 and concludes on December 10.

Tebogo Biholo, a youth leader at CRC, said they are trying to raise awareness about abuse among women and children and the social ills that affect the youth.

“We decided to host this event during the 16 Days campaign because we want to teach our community about abuse and how and where they can report it. Abuse is happening in our communities everyday but there are people who do not even know that they are being abused, especially children who are being abused by older people such as their neighbours or their family members. We also want to encourage women to break the silence and speak out against abuse.

“This event will not just end with the walk but we will also have a programme where people will be taught about kinds of abuse.

“Verbal abuse and sexual harassment have become very common in our communities and people are not reporting it simply because they are not even aware that it is abuse. We want them to have knowledge of their rights so that they will not be victims of abuse,” he said.

Biholo said the event is not only for church members but for everyone in the community who would like to join in the fight against women and child abuse. Biholo also indicated that he would like to make the event an annual occurrence.
