THE annual Impi event is taking a different direction this year by giving local talent the spotlight.

Impi, now in its sixth year, is a popular event on the city’s music calendar where renowned deejays battle it out on the decks in front of their fans.

The Impi stage has been graced by the likes of DJ Christos, DJ Shimza, DJ Black Coffee and many others. Event organiser Fano Gumede said that this year, in conjunction with Lerumo Events, they want to shine the spotlight on local talent.

“We are doing things differently this year and not bringing in any big names. We want to give local talent a chance to battle it out on the Impi stage while also fundraising for Community Chest to help feed destitute children,” he said.

Fanotainment and Lerumo Events will be holding auditions at the Winston Churchill Theatre on 24 September in search of three local artists who will battle it out at the annual Impi 2016 event at the end of November.

Gumede said following the success of the SA Music Conference in June, they want to continue giving exposure to the many artists that attended the conference.

“These auditions will only be open to artists and deejays who registered for the conference and those who attended it. We want them to now execute what they learned during the conference. We are giving our local artists an opportunity of a lifetime with this competition.

“In the first round we are looking for a minimum of 20 people to go through to the second round of auditions in October. We have three categories; deejays, Hip Hop and Kwaito artists.”

Gumede said contestants must prepare three minute sets for their auditions.

“Deejays will be judged based on their track selection, beat mixing and confidence and Kwaito and Hip hop artists will be judged on the quality of their music, confidence and the use of the stage when they are performing.”
