A total of 150 artists and deejays from Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas gathered at the Winston Churchill Theatre on Saturday for the Impi 2016 auditions.

The auditions which form part of the SA Music Conference that was held at the same venue in June were organised by Fanotainment in conjunction with Lerumo Productions.

Fano Gumede said the auditions were a success and they were happy with the turnout.

“What we realised is that we have so much of uncovered talent in Pietermaritzburg, we also noticed that we had many guys that we have never heard of in our city. We were happy to see new faces and names coming out to be part of this project. We are taking 13 Hip Hop groups, 10 Kwaito artists and seven deejays to the semi-finals.”

The semi-finals will be held on 29 October where the selected 30 will be competing against each other for the top three spots in the finals to be held in November.

Impi, now in its sixth year, is a popular event on the city’s music calendar where renowned deejays battle it out on the decks in front of their fans. This year the spotlight will be on local talent and the event is a fundraising for Community Chest to help feed destitute children.

Gumede said the semi-finals round will have a panel of celebrity judges and they are extending an invite to the general public to be part of the audience.
