“COMFORT and too much success breeds mediocrity.” This is just one of the powerful messages investigative journalist and guest speaker, Debra Patta, delivered at the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB) Women’s Day celebration at the Royal Showgrounds on Friday.

Patta rendered a talk on being a woman of courage, in line with the PCB’s theme for the event. She spoke about her career and advised women not to sell themselves short, to recognise their worth and fight for what they want.

“You don’t just knock on doors,” she said, “you bash them down.” She also quoted Nelson Mandela in saying, “courage is not the absence of fear but how you choose to deal with your fear.”

These were Madiba’s words to her when she was covering a story about him and other fallen heroes. “You have to pretend to be brave. Take the first step and then the second and the third. As you go on, you’ll see that you can be brave,” said Patta.

There was also lucky draws, entertainment and food at the event.
