AFTER being invited to the seventh Global Veterans Football Tournament, Maritzburg Sporting South Africa president David Pillay, along with various Pietermaritzburg football players of yesteryear, will be travelling to Malaysia to participate and represent South Africa in the games which will include 50 teams from around the world.

The tournament runs from August 16 to 19 and requires all teams to raise their own funds in order to participate in the games.

“Our side’s average age stands at 55 years and we have managed to include and identify local talent, with up to 80% of our squad having never before travelled abroad,” said Pillay, adding that the team has held a curry evening as well as a golf day to raise funds for their trip.

The team will be leaving for the tournament on August 14 to allow them enough time to settle. All the players in the team are from Pietermaritzburg.

“We are always looking outside for talent when events like these come up.

My idea was to base our team solely on those in Pietermaritzburg because of the immense and vast amount of talent that we have here at our disposal,” said Pillay.
